Hunting island treasures
Hunting Island Treasures on Jekyll Island, Georgia, is a unique and fun activity that attracts visitors each year during January and February. One of the most notable aspects of treasure hunting on the island is the legendary “glass globes.” These intricately designed glass floats are created by artists and are similar to the ones used by Japanese fishermen to buoy their nets. The cold winter months offer prime conditions for searching, as fewer visitors crowd the island.
BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF ARTWORK
Every day in January and February, Jekyll Island volunteers called Beach Buddies hide clear globes around the island. Inside the clear globe is a certificate with a specific identifier for a glass globe that can be redeemed for the actual glass globe at the Welcome Center as you come onto Jekyll Island. The glass globes at the Welcome Center are beautiful pieces of artwork commissioned by Jekyll Island Authority. Some of the areas where most of the clear glass globes are found include the beach parks, beach, beach village, historic district, common areas, and along the bike paths and walkways. Approximately two to four globes are hidden per day.
Many enthusiasts visit Jekyll Island during this time to hunt for these island treasures. If you don’t luck out in finding a globe, you can always purchase one at the Welcome Center. There are also smaller versions; all beautiful pieces of artwork.
