The airport gets a name
The St Simons Island Airport opened May 28,1938. It was named after Malcom B. McKinnon, chairman of the County Commission. He passed away seven months before the opening of the airport. The airport is located at the south end of the island at 115 Terminal Way.

During the war, the United States Army Air Forces established a base on St. Simons Island, known as the St. Simons Naval Air Station.
